Book Haul – February 2018

bookhaul

Mannn… it’s been a while since I’ve done a book mail/book haul post. I don’t even think I’ve officially done a Book Haul post. I did do a recap of my experience at Pasadena Loves YA last year and that included me going home with 42 FREE BOOKS. Guess that’s why I really haven’t been buying books. I have TOO MANY and I’m out of space. I’ve had to put about 100 or so in bins already and that’s totally killing me cause they’re all my pretties! I also have so many ARCs I’ve gotten from giveways and other books festivals, so I’ve been restraining myself from buying. However, I have no control at all over my addiction to requesting free ARCs for reviews. I really should read all the books I have, but what can I say, I LOVE books way too much.

I’m still doing well not purchasing too many physical books, but I just couldn’t pass up on some good deals. I would also like to let everyone know that I was a bit obsessed with downloading free Kindle ebooks last month. I honestly don’t know what got into me, but I think my fingers were possessed or something because I ended up with more than 20 ebooks and I don’t even remember some of them. LOL

Anyway, here’s my February Book Haul! It’s going to be a LOOOOONNNNGGG post, so grab a cup of tea or coffee and some yummy snacks. Oh and don’t forget to let me know in the comments if you’ve read any of them.

 PHYSICAL COPIES

Purchased from Goodwill

Sometimes, my boyfriend and I go to thrift stores and Goodwill to browse and shop for deals. I never go anywhere else other than the book section. Last month, I found these books and they’re all in really good/almost brand new conditions. They were all being sold for $0.99, but once I got to the register, 2 of them were ½ off! Doesn’t get any better than that! I LOVE finding books for cheap in very good conditions. Before you ask, I know I bought two Invaded – I didn’t know which one was in a better condition so I got them both and will be gifting the other one to a friend. Oh and I finally bought another copy of A Walk to Remember since my high school ex-boyfriend never gave mines back.

Invaded by Melissa Landers

invadedThe romantic sequel to Alienated takes long-distance relationships to a new level as Cara and Aelyx long for each other from opposite ends of the universe…until a threat to both their worlds reunites them.

Cara always knew life on planet L’eihr would be an adjustment. With Aelyx, her L’eihr boyfriend, back on Earth, working to mend the broken alliance between their two planets, Cara is left to fend for herself at a new school, surrounded by hostile alien clones. Even the weird dorm pet hates her.

Things look up when Cara is appointed as human representative to a panel preparing for a human colony on L’eihr. A society melding their two cultures is a place where Cara and Aelyx could one day make a life together. But with L’eihr leaders balking at granting even the most basic freedoms, Cara begins to wonder if she could ever be happy on this planet, even with Aelyx by her side.

Meanwhile, on Earth, Aelyx, finds himself thrown into a full-scale PR campaign to improve human-L’eihr relations. Humans don’t know that their very survival depends on this alliance: only Aelyx’s people have the technology to fix the deadly contamination in the global water supply that human governments are hiding. Yet despite their upper hand, the leaders of his world suddenly seem desperate to get humans on their side, and hardly bat an eye at extremists’ multiple attempts on Aelyx’s life.

The Way clearly needs humans’ help . . . but with what? And what will they ask for in return?

The Longest Ride by Nicholas Sparks

longestrideIn the tradition of his beloved first novel, The Notebook, #1 New York Times bestselling author Nicholas Sparks returns with the remarkable story of two couples whose lives intersect in profound and surprising ways.

Ira Levinson is in trouble. Ninety-one years old and stranded and injured after a car crash, he struggles to retain consciousness until a blurry image materializes beside him: his beloved wife Ruth, who passed away nine years ago. Urging him to hang on, she forces him to remain alert by recounting the stories of their lifetime together – how they met, the precious paintings they collected together, the dark days of WWII and its effect on them and their families. Ira knows that Ruth can’t possibly be in the car with him, but he clings to her words and his memories, reliving the sorrows and everyday joys that defined their marriage.

A few miles away, at a local bull-riding event, a Wake Forest College senior’s life is about to change. Recovering from a recent break-up, Sophia Danko meets a young cowboy named Luke, who bears little resemblance to the privileged frat boys she has encountered at school. Through Luke, Sophia is introduced to a world in which the stakes of survival and success, ruin and reward — even life and death – loom large in everyday life. As she and Luke fall in love, Sophia finds herself imagining a future far removed from her plans — a future that Luke has the power to rewrite . . . if the secret he’s keeping doesn’t destroy it first.

Ira and Ruth. Sophia and Luke. Two couples who have little in common, and who are separated by years and experience. Yet their lives will converge with unexpected poignancy, reminding us all that even the most difficult decisions can yield extraordinary journeys: beyond despair, beyond death, to the farthest reaches of the human heart.

A Walk to Remember by Nicholas Sparks

awalktorememberEvery April, when the wind blows from the sea and mingles with the scent of lilacs, Landon Carter remembers his last year at Beaufort High. It was 1958, and Landon had already dated a girl or two. He even swore that he had once been in love. Certainly the last person in town he thought he’d fall for was Jamie Sullivan, the daughter of the town’s Baptist minister.

A quiet girl who always carried a Bible with her schoolbooks, Jamie seemed content living in a world apart from the other teens. She took care of her widowed father, rescued hurt animals, and helped out at the local orphanage. No boy had ever asked her out. Landon would never have dreamed of it.

Then a twist of fate made Jamie his partner for the homecoming dance, and Landon Carter’s life would never be the same. Being with Jamie would show him the depths of the human heart and lead him to a decision so stunning it would send him irrevocably on the road to manhood…

No Vain Loss (No Ordinary Star #3) by M.C. Frank

novainlossA soldier is summoned to the North Pole, days before the year changes, told to fix the great Clock for a celebration. He has no idea what to do.
A girl, hunted for the crime of being born, almost dies out on the ice. She is rescued by the last polar bear left alive.
A library waits for them both, a library built over a span of a hundred years, forgotten in the basement of an ice shack.
The world hasn’t known hunger or sickness in hundreds of years. It has also forgotten love and beauty.
This is the One World.
The year is 2524.

Inspired by the short stories of Ray Bradbury, this futuristic young adult novel in three parts is set in a world where Christmas -among other things- is obsolete and a Clock is what keeps the fragile balance of peace.

Written in three parts, this is the breathtaking story of how two unlikely people change the world, and each other, one book at a time.

In No Vain Loss, the world is on the brink of the greatest war humanity has ever known. Lives will be lost. New truths will be revealed.

I feel so bad I haven’t gotten to this book. I made a plan that I would binge the duology, but that never happened cause I was reading so many other books. AND this is why I really need to stop requesting… I have so many amazing books already that’s been sitting in my TBR forever. I think that should be my Bookish Resolution for 2019. I mean I’ll start slowly now, but next year… I will make it my NUMBER ONE PRIORITY to read as many books as I can on my book shelves.

This one was a really nice surprise! Actually, all BOOKMAILS are the BEST!! I’ve never received a hard copy of a book from a publisher before, so I was super stoked to have this one! And the premise sounds really fun too!

nicetryjanesinnerThe only thing 17-year-old Jane Sinner hates more than failure is pity. After a personal crisis and her subsequent expulsion from high school, she’s going nowhere fast. Jane’s well-meaning parents push her to attend a high school completion program at the nearby Elbow River Community College, and she agrees, on one condition: she gets to move out.

Jane tackles her housing problem by signing up for House of Orange, a student-run reality show that is basically Big Brother, but for Elbow River Students. Living away from home, the chance to win a car (used, but whatever), and a campus full of people who don’t know what she did in high school… what more could she want? Okay, maybe a family that understands why she’d rather turn to Freud than Jesus to make sense of her life, but she’ll settle for fifteen minutes in the proverbial spotlight.

As House of Orange grows from a low-budget web series to a local TV show with fans and shoddy T-shirts, Jane finally has the chance to let her cynical, competitive nature thrive. She’ll use her growing fan base, and whatever Intro to Psychology can teach her, to prove to the world—or at least viewers of substandard TV—that she has what it takes to win.

I sent that poetic sext to a complete stranger.
And you know what the best part is?
He sent one back.

This is the story of what happens when a spark ignites and stars collapse. When words are heartbeats and poetry is a promise. This is Sonnet Cole’s story, and it’s just the beginning.

First World (A Walker Saga Book 1) by Jaymin Eve

firstworldA paranormal romance series.
An epic journey.
If the Seventine are released, will anyone survive?

Abigail Swish might not love her life, living in gang-ridden New York in 2035 and training to fight and survive with Compound 23. But she is grateful for a few things, especially her no-filter-between-brain-and-mouth best friend Lucy and her escape each night into a dream world far different from her own.

In fact, sometimes she lives for the fleeting moments she spends at night with the man who fuels every romantic fantasy she’s ever had. But each morning reality returns. She could just cry. But she won’t of course; tears don’t change a damn thing.

Then without any warning, a month before her eighteenth birthday, everything does change. A guardian finds her. He explains, in a strangely familiar accent, that she was stashed on Earth for safekeeping and has been lost to her family ever since. And it is time to return home. To the First World; a land of unimagined beauty.

Abigail and Lucy find themselves escaping New York, ending up on another planet and traversing through an unforgiving wilderness. Yeah, because that sort of thing just happens every day. Luckily an unexpected saviour arrives; the man from her dream-world. Brace is six-and-a-half feet of gorgeous perfectness, wrapped in an arrogance like no other. Unable to trust his assistance, and unsure which of her instincts to follow – kiss him or punch him in the mouth – Abigail eventually accepts his help to find her family.

And what a family. Enter Josian, her father; larger than life and apparently not even human. He is Walker, a planet-less race revered as gods, causing mischief and mayhem through-out this star-system. Unfortunately, there is no time for a cosy reunion, since no one explained that by returning to First World her half-Walker genetics would act as a catalyst setting forth a chain of events which could spell disaster for not only her existence but that of all worlds.

Then one night, she cuts the mouthy routine and does something far more productive with those lips, she kisses me. Now I can’t get Lucky Madden out of my mind. I’m addicted in every single way, and soon enough, the only person her brother will want to rip to pieces is me.

We were best friends since as early as I could remember. We grew up together. We were next door neighbors. We shared each other’s deepest secrets. Not The One (Lost in London #1) by Amy Daws

nottheoneMy name is Reyna Miracle.
Even though a part of my name is Miracle, there’s nothing miraculous about me.
My body portrays the tales of my life.
Every feeling, every heartbreak, every emotion.
Marked. Inked. Stained.
A walking canvas of my messed up truth.
But there’s one confession I can’t put in a tattoo.
A confession that will kill me to tell, but my best friend died before I had the chance.
Now I’m left with him.
The only one who can hold me in the night and squeeze that spot on my neck that feels like my lifeline between sanity and chaos.
But we don’t work together.
We’re absolute poison for each other.
We’re a stifling, suffocating, sickness of darkness.
But I feel safe…because I’ve made an art of pushing people away.
Now he’s pushing back…
And making me believe…
Making me wonder…
Maybe, just maybe…
I could be the one.

The Breakers Series: Books 1-3 by

breakersseriesIn the Breakers series, humanity faces not one apocalypse, but two: first a lethal pandemic, then a war against those who made the virus. This collection includes the first three books and is over 1000 pages (350,000 words) of post-apocalyptic survival.

BREAKERS (Book 1)

In New York, Walt Lawson is about to lose his girlfriend Vanessa. In Los Angeles, Raymond and Mia James are about to lose their house. Within days, none of it will matter. A plague tears across the world, reducing New York to an open grave and LA to a chaotic wilderness of violence and fires. Civilization comes to an abrupt stop.

Just as the survivors begin to adapt to the aftermath, Walt learns the virus that ended humanity wasn’t created by humans. It was inflicted from outside. The colonists who sent it are ready to finish the job–and Earth’s survivors may be too few and too weak to resist.

MELT DOWN (Book 2)

In upstate Idaho, Ness Hook is run out of his mom’s house by his bullying brother Shawn. In Redding, California, Tristan Carter is graduating college, but with no job and no prospects, she’ll have to move back in with her parents.

Then the world ends: first with a virus, then with an alien invasion.

Ness and Shawn take to the mountains to fight a guerrilla against the attackers. In California, Tristan and Alden are taken prisoner. Separated from her brother, Tristan crosses the ruins of America to track him down. She will stop at nothing to get Alden back–but her fellow survivors prove even more dangerous than the monsters who broke the world.

KNIFEPOINT (Book 3)

Raina was just a girl when the plague came. She survived. Her parents didn’t. Neither did the world. As civilization fell, she took to the ruins of Los Angeles, eating whatever she could catch.

After two years alone, she’s found and adopted by a fisherman and his wife. Their makeshift family lives a quiet life–until a man named Karslaw sails in from Catalina Island with an army of conquerors. Driven by visions of empire, he executes Raina’s new father as a traitor and takes her mother captive.

But Karslaw’s people aren’t the only ones vying for control of the ruined land. As violence wracks the city, Raina joins a rebellion against Karslaw’s rule. She will stop at nothing to free her mother–and to have her revenge.

Faery Born (War Faery Trilogy #1) by

faeryborn
If you are a fan of my other works, please note that this is a fantasy novel suitable for YA readers. It still embodies my writing style and sense of humour, but there is also magic, fighting, blood and gore. I would love for you to read this, but if you do not enjoy it, please feel free to refund it.

It’s been thirteen years since the Dark Years ended. Thirteen years since the mad War Faery responsible was imprisoned in stone. Now, with goblin attacks on the rise it seems Galanta, the Goblin Queen, is intent on returning the land to chaos and terror.
Isadora Scrumpleton is trying not to think about the Dark Years. She’s just been chosen by her ‘familiar’, found out she’s half faery, and discovered she’s dating the second-in-line to the Faery Throne. That’s enough for one teenage witch to handle. But when goblins attack her village, Izzy is forced into action, ultimately joining the elite Border Guard and attracting the attention of the Goblin Queen.
As Galanta weaves a web of deceit, Izzy struggles to control her powers. Will she be able to stop the Goblin Queen in time, or will the world be plunged into a dark new reality?

Most likely to succeed,
Most likely to win an Olympic gold,
Most likely to snag a billionaire?

Me? If the administration at Westerly High would have allowed the student body free rein, full creative control, I would have been voted:
Most likely to turn tricks for a living,
Most likely to screw you over,
or…
Most likely to—hopefully—die a slow and painful death.

In the weeks leading up to graduation, I was the single-most hated member of my senior class. I was the girl who had driven the school’s golden boy to his demise. I was the girl who’d done something sordid and shameful. Exposed in a cruel and very public way, I was the girl who got what she deserved.
I’m Carolyn. This is my story, and believe it or not, there’s a happy ending—even for someone like me.

The Faerie Prince (Creepy Hollow # 2) by Rachel Morgan

faerieprincePacked with spine-tingling intrigue and swoonworthy romance, the plot thickens in this YA fantasy from author Rachel Morgan…

Guardian trainee Violet Fairdale is just weeks away from one of the most important occasions of her life: graduation. After messing up big time by bringing a human into the fae realm, Vi needs to step up her game and forget about Nate if she hopes to graduate as the top guardian of her year. Everything would be fine if she wasn’t forced to partner with Ryn, her ex-friend, ex-enemy, current ‘sort of friend’. They might be trying to patch up their relationship, but does she really want to spend a week undercover with him for their final assignment? On top of that, the possibly insane Unseelie Prince is still on the loose, free to ‘collect’ as many specially talented faeries as he can find–and Vi is still at the top of his list. Add in faerie queens, enchanted storms, complicated not-just-friends feelings, and a murder within the Guild itself, and graduation is about to become the least of Vi’s problems.

Pursuing Carrie (Pretending #3) by Jenn Hype

pursuingcarrieCarrie is plain, quiet and doesn’t really give a shit what people think. Her priorities in life have absolutely nothing to do with dating or relationships. Quite the opposite, in fact, seeing as how a relationship is the absolute last thing she wants. Ever.

Joe is charming and charismatic, but the only thing he’s ever worked hard at in his adult life is his job. Outside of being a cop, he’s only interested in things that come easily, and that includes women. He gives the women he sleeps with respect, affection, and mind blowing orgasms – but that’s all he gives.

After being brought together by a mutual friend, Stacy, Joe and Carrie don’t exactly hit it off. They are the exact opposite of what the other looks for in a lover, yet they can’t fight the growing attraction that blossoms between them.

Under the pretense of wanting to be friends for the sake of Stacy, Joe sets out to win Carrie over, but his normal charms don’t work on her. And the more he tries to win her friendship, the more he realizes that friendship is not at all what he really wants.

Carrie’s willpower is strong, but it’s no match for Joe’s persistence, and despite her reluctance, Carrie finds herself falling for Joe in a way that she’s sure will cause irreparable damage in the end. Because nothing good ever comes out of hooking up with someone you care about, and why should this time be the exception?

Tainted pasts, crazy ex-lovers and flying dildos notwithstanding, Carrie and Joe find themselves venturing into unknown territory. It’s not easy, but it’s hot as hell, and luckily they are both too stubborn to give up easily on something that feels a lot more real than a short fling.

**Can be read as a standalone, but backstory and character development from the first two books of the series may make this read more enjoyable

Pure Healing (Pure Ones #1) by Aja James

purehealingIn the world of Pure Ones, where sexual intercourse with anyone other than one’s Eternal Mate leads to a slow, painful death within thirty days, love comes with the warning label “fall at your own peril.”

Rain, the Healer of this immortal race, is the only exception to the rule. In order to harness and accumulate enough energy to heal severe wounds, she must take a Consort once every ten years and draw strength from his blood and body through sexual exchange. As the war with vampire hordes wears on, few Pure-males who are strong enough to serve as her Consort remain.

Valerius is one of the few. As the Protector of the race, he is by far the strongest candidate Rain could hope for. Despite their instant attraction ten years ago when they first met, Valerius has staunchly avoided applying to be the Healer’s Consort. The brutality and violence he suffered as a Roman sex slave in his human life ate away at his soul, leaving a raw, gaping wound of anguish and self-doubt, which two thousand years of stoic, solitary existence has not been able to heal.

As the decadal rite draws near, as threats from their nemesis intensify, and as Rain’s strength drains with every healing act, Valerius beats back his inner demons and gives himself to the Healer unconditionally. Rain chooses Valerius despite her fear that her desire and need for him would lead her to repeat the mistakes of the past with her first Consort. To avoid that tragedy, Rain stipulates from the beginning that Valerius cannot fall in love with her, for she cannot love him in return. Even though the consequence is death, this is the one promise Valerius cannot keep.

As Rain and Valerius battle their personal pain and fears, they must decide whether they let their histories and duties dictate their destiny or whether they risk all for a chance at everlasting love.

Cecilia by Sandra L. Rostirolla

ceciliaWhen the corrupt Senators of Vitus send soldiers to destroy the village of Plockton and enslave the young men, eighteen-year-old Cecilia, the lone survivor, makes the bold decision to rescue her brothers. Armed with little more than her wit and her great ancestor’s Freedom Tree pendant, she sets off along the trail left by the soldiers only to be confronted by the assassin Amalardh, a servant of Vitus sent to kill the bearer of a symbol—the same symbol around her neck. Unable to follow through with his order, Amalardh takes Cecilia prisoner.

Pieces of an ancient prophecy are falling into place. Cecilia’s pendant has found its way home. Its true owner—Amalardh. Descendant from a forgotten order, Amalardh is the Last Croilar Tier, protector of the Treoir Solas—Cecilia; only, neither of them know this yet. Finding her brothers is the least of Cecilia’s problems. The Goddess of Light is dying. As the Goddess’s conduit on earth, if Cecilia cannot find a way to defeat the Army of Vitus and end the Senators’ dark rule the Goddess will die, and with her death comes the end for all.

At its core, CECILIA is an epic love story between a headstrong young woman who refuses to accept the status quo of her fractured world and an emotionally bankrupt assassin struggling to find his humanity.

WHEW!!!! I told you I went a tad bit CRAY CRAY in February. Amazingly, I’m doing really well this month… BUT there’s still 15 days left. Really hoping I don’t download too many.

What books did you end up adding to your book shelves last month?

    • I didn’t either. Sometimes they have nothing really, but other times, you’d be surprised with what you’ll find. I actually bought Chaos of Standing Still for $3.00 and the book looked NEW. Like someone got it for Christmas and didn’t want it and just donated it. It even looked better than some books on Target and B&N since sometimes people read them and are careless putting them back on the shelves.

You should totally check Goodwill and let me know what you find =). I’ve seen some people finding ARCs and complete book series.
