Synopsis 

Colette Rodriguez hates rules. Just ask her perfect, older, gorgeous, rule-following sister, Jana.

But now that Jana’s away at college and Colette’s a sophomore in high school, things are going to change. She’s gotta find a way to get out from under her sister’s shadow.

The problem is, everyone, including the boys, remembers perfectly-hot-Jana and they constantly compare Colette to her.

With Jana finally out of the house, Colette decides that sophomore year is the best time to make her mark on the world. She vows to follow the rules, although rule-following has never been her strong point. When a teacher asks Colette to lead a STEM Mentoring project, working with middle school kids, Colette sees her chance to stand out, though she doubts her ability to take charge.

Enter Will Gamen, junior football star. Looking for a club to boost his chances of a college scholarship, Will signs up for STEM. From the first meeting, when Will inadvertently takes over, Colette wonders if he should really be the person to run the project. And, in an even more confusing turn of events, Will starts to drop by her house for unplanned study dates. After the two spend one fabulous Saturday night together, he suddenly backs off.

But Colette and Will started out as friends and she’s determined not to let one meaningless kiss come between them. Plus, keeping Will on her team is the best thing for the STEM project. And it also gives her more time to convince him that they work better as a couple.

Review

My Sophomore Year of Rules by Jennifer DiGiovanni is all kinds of fun and cuteness! Such a lovely read that left a huge dorky smile on my face.

This book is incredibly charming, absolutely hilarious and ridiculously adorable! The push and pull is amazing and kept me intrigued. Spine-tingling moments made me feel like a teenager falling in love for the first time and I enjoyed every moment! Oh and the ending…that hilarious romantic gesture – so utterly swoontastic that had me gushing and wishing I was Collette. I’d probably be beet red embarrassed, but I’m a hopeless romantic and would love it wholeheartedly. Definitely not going to say anymore, but be prepared to fall head over heels for Will.

Collette and Will are such wonderful characters and I loved them both! Collette’s smart, sassy and beautiful. I admired her for trying to follow “the rules” and being resilient even when she’s having some doubts. I definitely saw a little bit of my teenage self in her. Will didn’t make me fall for him right away. He’s aloof and confusing and definitely frustrated me a bit. But his quiet demeanor and sweet personality eventually captured my heart. These two together drove me totally insane with all their drama and misunderstandings, but in a wonderfully swoony way. They are just so cute together and their chemistry’s amazing!

There are so many great things about this book – fantastic writing, realistic and lovable characters, awesome friendships, and a lovely romance. It made me smile, laugh, and remember the sweetness of falling in love. I haven’t read the other books in the series, but that’s going to change really soon. If you’re looking for a light, hilarious, and delightful YA contemporary romance, then I highly recommend you pick this up.

Cora shaded her eyes against the unnaturally large alien sun. The approaching truck began to take shape as it cut through the thick dust clouds, tearing across Armstrong preserve’s scrubby desert landscape toward the patch of bare land where she and her friends stood. Beside her, Rolf held Nok’s hand tightly. Leon paced a few feet away, sweat streaming down his brow. Whoever –whatever — was in that truck, the four of them, alone and unarmed and malnourished, couldn’t possibly be much of a match.

I love this series! I’ve been putting off reading The Gauntlet for the longest time and I really need to change that very soon because I miss Cora and Cassian and the rest of the gang.
