synopsis2

On the remnants of oil platforms in the Gulf of Mexico and Dauphin Island, Joe is a typical Nob Platform teenager, except that her Mom left a year ago for a more social Platform, and her Dad sometimes forgets she exists. But she knows she wants a career in Communications, so her high school senior project “See-Saw” focuses on long-distance underwater connections. Drayton, Joe’s best friend, discovers lights moving on Land at the same time Joe picks up SOS signals with her See-Saw.

Though Land has been silent since technology was destroyed during the Moralist Revolution, Joe and Drayton discover that the Platform Planning Commission (PPC) seems to be ultimately responsible for the Bone Virus that precipitated the Revolution. They enlist the help of Flox, a debunked scientist, to take them to Land to investigate the remnants of human Land society—before the PPC can stop them. What they find on Land will forever change the course of their lives and the lives of all Platform Dwellers.

excerpt2

“Stop. No, really. What has salvaging come to? We’re eating on Yield signs.”

“Well, how many real plates do you have left?”

My great-grandmother hadn’t thought to bring plates, just scientific equipment. So my father had grown up eating out of whatever his mother could find that was serviceable—shells, Styrofoam cones, or with his hands from the cooking vessel. But my mother had brought almost twenty plates to their marriage. She didn’t take any of them with her, so there are eighteen left. Most of them are patched, but two are in pristine condition.

Lisette nudges my arm, and I jerk in my seat. Duritz scoops an interesting seaweed salad onto my plate. The seaweed has been sun baked in a light yellow sauce. I don’t even look at Lisette’s plate. I’m not fond of eels.

“Bon appetite,” Duritz says happily and backs away from the table.

I don’t mind the taste of seaweed, so I take a big bite. The yellow sauce is tangy, but I can’t place the flavor. Whatever it is, it’s much better than the plain sea grass that I had for dinner last night.

“Not bad,” I say between mouthfuls. “Yours?”

Lisette makes a face. “Should have gone with the farmed sponge. Going to have to force this down.”

We don’t waste any resources on the platform, including food. We save bones, recycle waste water, and use every scrap of material that we have until it goes in the permanent scrap pile. Even then we keep it to stuff beds.

Lisette gags and gulps down her water.

I push my glass toward her. “Have some of mine. At least it isn’t octopus. That would be a real mess before our last classes. Indigestion on a plate.”

synopsis2

Alexis takes her job very seriously. As one of the younger account executives, proving herself in the workplace is much more important than having a love life. And now that she’s been assigned a dude ranch account, she’s more determined than ever to show her doubters that she has what it takes.

Unfortunately there’s a tall, hot-tempered, brown-eyed cowboy who manages to distract Alexis from her goal by grabbing her attention…in a non-professional kind of way.

Mitch is the cowboy of her dreams—and also a distraction her career can’t afford.

And the real doozy? He also happens to be the ranch owner’s son, and this little fact alone has the potential to ruin everything for this city girl.

What is your favorite part about being a writer?

Getting creative. That moment when you’re in writing mode and the words flow. It doesn’t matter whether they turn out to be good or bad. Love that feeling.

What is your favorite and least favorite type of scene to write?

Any scene that builds tension whether it is through dialogue or actions. Let’s get the brawls started.

Does any of your personality ever go into any of your characters?

Yes, but I have much more fun using my daughter as a character and embarrassing the heck out of her. She hates showing up in my characters, but she’s in so many of them. Alexis, from The Sweet Life, took on a life all her own. I can’t say I based her on anyone.

If you’re not writing books, what would you be doing for a living?

I’m not making enough money yet to support my collection of stray dogs and retired horses so I still work a day job. I teach as an adjunct at a local college. It’s almost as fun as writing and horseback riding.

If you could tell your younger writing-self anything, what would it be?

Stop taking yourself so seriously. Remember, this is supposed to be fun.

If you were stranded on an island, what 5 books would you wish for?

Lord of the Flies (of course) by William Golding for a reality check; The Stand by Stephen King to consider all things good and evil; Dead until Dark by Charlaine Harris and Wildfire in His Arms by Johanna Lindsey for escapism; and Local Girls by Alice Hoffman for a happy ending after lots of tragedy.

Which author(s) have inspired your writing?

So many! I’m on a Lisa Kleypas kick.  Loving her books.

Do you read your book reviews? How do you deal with good or bad reviews?

Ugh. Yes. I’m okay with negative reviews if there is an explanation along with the rating. I hate getting one or two-star reviews with nothing. How do I know what to fix, if readers don’t tell me?

What advice do you have for new writers?

Keep going. It takes a lot of work. Constant. Work. I try to continually improve my craft by writing new books, trying different genres, getting involved in writing groups and attending conferences.
