She’s a loving and faithful friend who’s built a successful career despite the disappointments she’s experienced. While her past hasn’t stopped her from working hard and becoming a genuine and confident woman, it has affected one small part of her. Nikki refuses to give her heart to anyone ever again.

excerpt

I was pulling into the garage at my house.  Nikki’s car was still there. It was crazy. Seeing her car there, knowing she would be inside when I walked through the door, made me feel like a teenage boy all over again.

I parked my truck, grabbed my gear, and walked into the house.  Once inside, I smelled something awful and poked my head around the wall to make sure nothing was on fire.  I saw Nikki sitting at the island with her head down on the countertop.

Something was wrong.

I set my gear down just inside the door and asked, “Nikki, what’s wrong?”

She lifted her head to look at me and all I saw was frustration in her face.

“I suck,” she blurted.

“I’m sorry.  What?”

She shook her head and explained, “I should have gone to work today.  I’m not domesticated. I thought since I was here and had gotten everything ready that we’re taking with us to the party tonight, I’d try my hand at making you lunch for when you got back.  I suck. I’m the worst cook on the face of the planet.”

“Is that what that smell is?” I asked.

Her face changed from frustrated to sad.  “I really tried. I have no idea what I’m doing.”

I walked over to her, turned her body on the stool to face mine, and wrapped her up in a hug.  Her hands went to my hips as her forehead dropped to the middle of my chest.

“It’s ok, babe.”

“But, Luke, I made your house smell and I don’t have a single thing made that’s edible.  Now’s your chance to get out of this. Don’t try your hardest to make me fall in love with you and then leave me because you suddenly realize that I’ll never be able to prepare you the kind of meal you deserve to have after a long day of training.”

“Look at me,” I demanded.

With her hands still on my hips, she lifted her head and looked up at me.

“I fell in love with you knowing you can’t cook for shit.  I don’t care that you can’t either; I’m not leaving you. If you fall in love with me, I won’t care if we have to eat toast for the rest of our lives.”

“Just saying…I’d probably burn the toast.”

abouttheauthor

A.K. Evans is a married mother of two boys residing in a small town in northeastern Pennsylvania. After graduating from Lafayette College in 2004 with two degrees (one in English and one in Economics & Business), she pursued a career in the insurance and financial services industry. Not long after, Evans realized the career was not for her. She went on to manage her husband’s performance automotive business and drive the shop race cars for the next thirteen years. While the business afforded her freedoms she wouldn’t necessarily have had in a typical 9-5 job, after eleven years she was no longer receiving personal fulfillment from her chosen career path. Following many discussions, lots of thought, and tons of encouragement, Andrea decided to pursue her dream of becoming a writer.

Between her day job, writing, and homeschooling her two boys, Evans is left with very little free time. When she finds scraps of spare time, she enjoys reading, doing yoga, watching NY Rangers hockey, dancing, and vacationing with her family. Andrea, her husband, and her children are currently working on taking road trips to visit all 50 states (though, Alaska and Hawaii might require flights).

synopsispic

Jesobel Jones is bold and brash, the daughter of a hand model and a washed-up rock star. Jess sees no need to apologize for her rambling house, her imperfect family, her single status … or her weight. Jess is who she is. She makes her own cupcakes and she eats them, too. No regrets.
That is, until Own Clothes Day rolls around at school. Jess and her friends dedicate the requisite hours of planning to their outfits, their hair and their makeup for the one day they are free from school uniforms. But a wardrobe malfunction leaves Jess with a pair of leggings split open at the worst spot, and a mean girl calling her the one thing that’s never bothered her before: fat.
The encounter shakes Jess’s formerly iron-clad confidence, and she starts to wonder if she’s been just a little too comfortable in her own skin. When the boy of her dreams invites her to a party, she must decide whether to try to fit in for the first time in her life, or remain true to herself — whoever that really is.

excerpt

You will not believe this,” Hannah says. She flips up the lid of her ancient laptop.

“How can you not have seen this?”

“I turned my phone off and didn’t go on the computer. I wasn’t in the mood,” I say.

“Well,” she says, “I think you’ll be in the mood for this. You’re everywhere. Look.” She’s on YouTube. It’s a clip called “Fat Girl vs. Mean Girl.”

It’s me. It’s a film of me. And Zara. You see me and my face as she says something that you can’t hear. And then you see me say, with added subtitles, what I said: “Grotesque, Zara? That’s a big word for you — do you think you can spell it?” And then she lunges forward and I step to the side. She falls flat on her face. And there I am, with my foot on her bum, pretending to be a triumphant boxer. The girls all around are cheering me on.

OMG. There’s a clip of me. On the Internet . There have been a few thousand views already. My first reaction: that’s brilliant. My moment of triumph over Zara has been captured forever. Now it’s there for all to see. My second reaction: Do I really look like that? For once in my life, I am speechless.  watch the clip over and over again. Partly in disbelief, partly in pride, partly in shock at my legs. I grapple with the knowledge that this clip of me is now being seen all over the world. Maybe girls in Mongolian huts are taking time from milking their yaks to go, “Have you seen that girl on YouTube? She really should lose some weight!”

As I watch, the number of views just goes up and up. I’ve heard of things going viral but this is beyond weird. Despite my legs being really rather sturdy, they start to wobble and my head spins. I might actually be sick. Weakly, I say, “Who put it on with the subtitles?” Hannah looks proud. “Oh, that was Sana’s idea. We had IT so she just did it then. Do you like it?” See, normally, I would like it, but now I’m not so sure. I’m beginning to see how the whole world must see me. And the thought that my body is now being broken into squillions of pixels and being sent round the world for people to laugh at is just not okay on any level. Just minutes ago, I was baking in my kitchen and I was in control of me and my ingredients. I’m so not in control of this. A feeling rises up inside me that I’m not quite familiar with. Panic.
