TBR Thursdays

tbrthursday

Hello  bookish friends! It’s time for another TBR Thursdays which is a weekly segment that highlights books, ebooks, and ARCs that I own and have been in my TBR forever. At the end of the year, I’ll do a recap to see how many of these books I actually read.

If you want to help me tackle my neverending TBR, share your thoughts and recommendations with me.

Today’s pick is…

In a land ruled and shaped by violent magical storms, power lies with those who control them.

Aurora Pavan comes from one of the oldest Stormling families in existence. Long ago, the ungifted pledged fealty and service to her family in exchange for safe haven, and a kingdom was carved out from the wildlands and sustained by magic capable of repelling the world’s deadliest foes. As the sole heir of Pavan, Aurora’s been groomed to be the perfect queen. She’s intelligent and brave and honorable. But she’s yet to show any trace of the magic she’ll need to protect her people.

To keep her secret and save her crown, Aurora’s mother arranges for her to marry a dark and brooding Stormling prince from another kingdom. At first, the prince seems like the perfect solution to all her problems. He’ll guarantee her spot as the next queen and be the champion her people need to remain safe. But the more secrets Aurora uncovers about him, the more a future with him frightens her. When she dons a disguise and sneaks out of the palace one night to spy on him, she stumbles upon a black market dealing in the very thing she lacks—storm magic. And the people selling it? They’re not Stormlings. They’re storm hunters.

Legend says that her ancestors first gained their magic by facing a storm and stealing part of its essence. And when a handsome young storm hunter reveals he was born without magic, but possesses it now, Aurora realizes there’s a third option for her future besides ruin or marriage.

She might not have magic now, but she can steal it if she’s brave enough.

Challenge a tempest. Survive it. And you become its master.

I actually read a preview of this on Netgalley and thought the concept was really fascinating. I really enjoyed the first few chapters, so I bought the book on Amazon. When it finally arrived, I must have been distracted reading other books that I set this one aside with every intention of continuing. But, as you can see, it hasn’t made it out of my TBR pile. What do you think about this book? Should I bump it up and read it since the sequel is coming out soon? Let me know in the comments.

Let luck find you.

Alice doesn’t believe in luck—at least, not the good kind. But she does believe in love, and for some time now, she’s been pining for her best friend, Teddy. On his eighteenth birthday—just when it seems they might be on the brink of something—she buys him a lottery ticket on a lark. To their astonishment, he wins $140 million, and in an instant, everything changes.

At first, it seems like a dream come true, especially since the two of them are no strangers to misfortune. As a kid, Alice won the worst kind of lottery possible when her parents died just over a year apart from each other. And Teddy’s father abandoned his family not long after that, leaving them to grapple with his gambling debts. Through it all, Teddy and Alice have leaned on each other. But now, as they negotiate the ripple effects of Teddy’s newfound wealth, a gulf opens between them. And soon, the money starts to feel like more of a curse than a windfall.

As they try to find their way back to each other, Alice learns more about herself than she ever could have imagined…and about the unexpected ways in which luck and love sometimes intersect.

I was lucky enough to grab an ARC of this book last year when I went to LA Times Books Festival. When I read the premise, I knew I would really enjoy reading this book. I’ve always been fascinated by the concept of winning the lottery and would imagine all the things I’d buy if I ever did win. Anyway, since Yallwest was coming up next, I didn’t get the chance to start this. Fast forward several days later and guess what came in my Uppercase?!?! Yup, the hardcopy of this book. Maybe the universe was telling me something… but it’s been almost a year and I still have not read this. I get so swamped with other books I want to read, and Kasie West’s Lucky in Love sounded so cute and funny and adorable that I decided to pick that one and yeah… this one sort of just got unlucky and stuck in my TBR pile.

Have you read this book? What did you think? Should I bump it up my TBR?

What are some books you meant to read, but got stuck in your TBR because you had other books you wanted to read first? Let me know in the comments.

As always, thanks for reading and have a great day!
