The Torres sisters dream of escape. Escape from their needy and despotic widowed father, and from their San Antonio neighborhood, full of old San Antonio families and all the traditions and expectations that go along with them. In the summer after her senior year of high school, Ana, the oldest sister, falls to her death from her bedroom window. A year later, her three younger sisters, Jessica, Iridian, and Rosa, are still consumed by grief and haunted by their sister’s memory. Their dream of leaving Southtown now seems out of reach. But then strange things start happening around the house: mysterious laughter, mysterious shadows, mysterious writing on the walls. The sisters begin to wonder if Ana really is haunting them, trying to send them a message—and what exactly she’s trying to say.

Haunting, Beautifully Written, and Deeply Moving

IMG_4092

Haunting and beautifully written, Tigers, Not Daughters by Samantha Mabry is a raw, empowering, and deeply moving story about grief, self-discovery, and the unbreakable bond between sisters. It’s a tragic, painful, and dark story, but it’s also wonderfully healing, hopeful and filled with so much love.

The Torres sisters are dealing with their own battles and grief over losing their eldest sister, Ana. Rafe, their father, has demons of his own and isn’t the easiest person to live with. They’re all struggling and hurting in their own ways and when Ana’s ghost starts to haunt them, the sisters come together and find the strength they need to overcome their fears and finally move forward.

I took a while to get through this book not because it wasn’t amazing cause it’s definitely that in so many ways. I just felt like I had to get to know the Torres sisters really well, be with them, and experience whatever they feel. Their pain was so palpable and watching the sisters deal with their grief made my heart ache. They’re flawed and not always easy to relate with, but there’s something so magnetic, genuine, and real about them. I definitely have a soft spot for Rosa, but all the sisters affected me. Jessica frustrated me cause of her relationship with her boyfriend, but I also felt her anger and anguish the most. Iridian’s insecurities made me hurt and I just wanted to protect her. And even though the sisters are in their own little world searching for something to ease their pain of losing Ana, I loved that they’re always there to protect each other no matter what happens.

This story is breathtakingly mesmeric, unique, and touching. Samantha Mabry’s writing is gorgeous, riveting and had me enthralled until the end. The plot is filled with aches and pain, but also joy and hope. I enjoyed the magical realism, the few lighthearted moments, the thrills, and the surprises that had me turning the pages. I loved the Torres sisters and the side characters are quite interesting too. I really enjoyed reading this book and can’t wait to read more from Mabry. Tigers, Not Daughters is truly a beautiful and engrossing story and I honestly can’t recommend it enough.

I received a copy of this book from the author and publisher, Algonquin Young Readers, in exchange for a fair and honest review and for participating in the Book Tour. All thoughts are my own.

She shivered. The fire had gone out. She kept on her jacket while she added logs to the fireplace and kindling to get it started. Within a couple of minutes, the fire was going. She’d had a fireplace as a kid, so relearning her way around this one hadn’t been so bad. She went back to the kitchen and turned on the kettle for tea.

Bob growled low in his throat and stared toward the front door.

She froze. Her phone was in her hip pocket. Her gun was still in her waistband at the small of her back. This was something else Marshal Holloway had insisted upon. He’d taught her how to use a handgun. They’d held many target practices right behind this cabin.

A creak beyond the front door warned that someone was on the porch. She eased across the room and went to the special peephole that had been installed. There was one on each side of the cabin, allowing for views all the way around. A man stood on the porch. He was the typical local cowboy. Jeans and boots. Hat in his hands. Big truck in the drive. Just like Marshal Holloway.

But she did not know this man.

“Alice Stewart, if you’re in there, it’s okay for you to open the door. I’m Sheriff Colt Tanner. Branch sent me.”

Her heart thudding, she held perfectly still. Branch would never send someone to her without letting her know first. If for some reason he couldn’t tell her in advance, they had a protocol for these situations.

She reached back, fingers curled about the butt of her weapon. Bob moved stealthily toward the door.

“I know you’re concerned about opening the door to a stranger, but you need to trust me. Branch has been in an accident, and he’s in the hospital undergoing surgery right now. No matter that his injuries were serious, he refused to go into surgery until he spoke to me and I assured him I would look after you, ma’am.”

Worry joined the mixture of fear and dread churning inside her. She hoped Branch wasn’t hurt too badly. He had a wife and a daughter.

She opened her mouth to ask about his condition, but then she snapped it shut. The man at her door had not said the code word.

A Fun and Thrilling Romantic Suspense

4hearts2 (1)

3.75 rounded to 4

Witness Protection Widow by Debra Webb is a fantastic and engaging romantic suspense that had me feeling on edge a few times and I enjoyed every moment.

Even though this book is part of a series, I don’t think it’s necessary to read the other novels to enjoy this. I had no problem getting into the story and finished reading within a few hours. Webb’s writing style is easy to read, the pacing is fast, and there’s plenty of drama, action, and suspense to keep the story going. I also enjoyed the romance aspect. It seemed realistic and the chemistry between Allison and Jaxson felt believable. There’s definitely a few swoony and heartwarming moments. I wasn’t too fond of the way the story ended. It seemed like it was rushed and I was definitely expecting more intensity, and feels.

Both Ali and Jax were interesting characters. Knowing what happened to Ali made me heart ache, but I admired her strength and determination to do what is right. Jax was a wonderful lead and hero. I enjoyed watching them together and finally realizing that they can move forward and start a new chapter in their lives.

With an intriguing and fast-paced plot, amazing lead characters, and the perfect blend of suspense, drama, and thrills, Witness Protection Widow by Debra Webb is a truly entertaining and enjoyable read.

If you love a quick and fun romance thriller, then I definitely think you should check this one and add it on your TBR.

I received an advance reader copy of this book via Netgalley from the publisher in exchange for a fair and honest review and for participating in the Blog Tour. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
