The struggle to get into a top-tier college consumes sixteen-year-old Genie Lo’s every waking thought. But when her sleepy Bay Area town comes under siege from hell-spawn straight out of Chinese folklore, her priorities are suddenly and forcefully rearranged.

Her only guide to the demonic chaos breaking out around her is Quentin Sun, a beguiling, maddening new transfer student from overseas. Quentin assures Genie she is strong enough to fight these monsters, for she unknowingly harbors an inner power that can level the very gates of Heaven.

Genie will have to dig deep within herself to summon the otherworldly strength that Quentin keeps talking about. But as she does, she finds the secret of her true nature is entwined with his, in a way she could never have imagined…

I was able to snag an ARC at the Pique booth during Yallwest and also met the author. (He’s so nice!) The premise sounds super awesome and I’ve been meaning to read this… BUT then I started to get into blogging and all of a sudden I have a long list of books to read for reviews. And it doesn’t help that my work life has been nonstop crazy busy… Anyway, I’ll definitely adding this for my Septermber TBR cause I cannot wait any longer!!!

The Hearts We Sold

Published by Little Brown Books for Young Readers
Genre(s): Fantasy, Young Adult, Science Fiction
Pages: Hardcover 400
Buy Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Book Depository
When Dee Moreno makes a deal with a demon—her heart in exchange for an escape from a disastrous home life—she finds the trade may have been more than she bargained for. And becoming “heartless” is only the beginning. What lies ahead is a nightmare far bigger, far more monstrous than anything she could have ever imagined.

With reality turned on its head, Dee has only a group of other deal-making teens to keep her grounded, including the charming but secretive James Lancer. And as something grows between them amid an otherworldy ordeal, Dee begins to wonder: Can she give someone her heart when it’s no longer hers to give?

Both of these books deal with demons, but in different ways. Both have some romance so that’s definitely a plus for me. Both sound really exciting and fun, and absolutely amazing. I’m seriously hoping I can get to them really really soon.

Sincerely Karen Jo

JULY 2017

Happy Friday Eve Everyone! Time to show you what’s in this month’s Uppercasebox

  • Signed Hardcover of Words on Bathroom Walls by Julia Walton
  • A beautifully embossed art print of a popular Stephen King quote
  • An adorable Cheshire Cat socks from Socksmith
  • A super cute kitty sticker
  • A lovely postcard with a quote from Words in Deep Blue

I just read the blurb for Words on Bathroom Walls and I’m pretty excited about it. The book sounds a bit too serious and heavy for me right now so I’m going to save it for Fall or Winter. I’m kind of a mood reader and prefer light, fun, and fluffy stories during summer. I like all the other goodies included in the box, but I’m not too excited about them. Overall, this month’s box is quite decent, but I’m probably going to cancel because I need to start saving money for my traveling expenses.

Uppercase has been a really great book subscription for the past year and if money wasn’t an issue, I definitely would continue. I’ll most likely come back sometime in the future.

If you’d like to receive August’s box, don’t forget to subscribe by August 1 on Uppercasebox.
