First Lines Fridays

Good Evening to some of you who are still in the Friday night timezone. I’m feeling a little bit better, but still not 100%. I just stayed in bed the whole day and took long naps and would wake up just to get some food in my tummy. I’m hoping to get a really good sleep tonight cause tomorrow is going to be a very long day. Visiting the boyfriend’s fam for lunch and then going to a friend’s party after… so there’s going to be a lot of eating and socializing. Anyway, just wanted to share the first few lines of what I’m currently reading right now so let’s get to it!

Never remove a blade from a wound. Her mom’s warning cried through the howling wind. Could her spirit see Halen now — read her frantic thoughts? How else would her mom have known how desperately she wanted to let Dax sink to the ocean floor? He was a knife in her heart; if she let him go, death would follow.

Holding on tortured her worn muscles as she fought the waves from stealing his body from her grip. The unforgiving ocean shoved Dax forward, ramming his head into her jaw. Screaming, the salt water rushed between her lips, choking her breath. She was a siren — she wouldn’t drown, but it didn’t stop the ocean from trying to claim her.

Darkness is Calling

She sacrificed her soul to save the realms. Now Halen must face a life tethered to a curse. But can she accept a world without Asair and her sister? She has no clue where to find them and with an unconscious Guardian, it’s not as if she can travel far. As the days spin to months, and the elixir she so desperately needs to cast magick diminishes, Halen must learn to survive without her powers while drowning the evil whispers calling to her soul—a call she must never answer. Still, she fears, what if the mermaid’s twisted vision were true? Will the darkness consume her power before Natalie and Asair find her? Will she resist or ruin them all?

So, I really love this series. I actually just posted my reviews for the first two books. If you haven’t read it, I’ll link it down below. I had planned on reading this yesterday night, but as you know, I wasn’t feeling that well. I tried to read a little bit today, but that definitely did not work. Hoping I get to read this weekend cause I’m miss everyone already and I’m so excited to find out how the series ends.

The tide surged, carving a crescent in the sand. Water Collapsed against my knees, tearing the beach out from under my legs. But when the wave receded, the foam clung to something dark. Something long and still.

I saw his face, lashes tangled over blue lids, his lips parted against the sand. The breeze rippled off his clothes, ocean peeling from his face and dripping onto my hands. I was steeled there, not sure if he was real, until I saw his eves, a flash of his dark pupils.

Bryn Reyes is a real life sleeping beauty. Afflicted with Klein-Levin Syndrome, she suffers episodes of prolonged sleep that steal weeks, and sometimes even months, from her life. But unlike most KLS patients, she doesn’t spend each episode in a catatonic state or wake up with no recollection of the time she’s missed. Instead, Bryn spends half her life in an alternate reality made up of her memories. For Bryn, the past is a place, until one day a boy she’s never met before washes up on the illusory beach of her dreams with no memory of who he is.

But the appearance of this strange boy isn’t the only thing that’s changed. Bryn’s symptoms are worsening, her body weakening as she’s plagued by hallucinations even while awake. Her only hope of finding a cure is to undergo experimental treatment created by a German specialist. But when Dr. Banz reveals that he knows more about her strange symptoms than he originally let on, Bryn learns that the boy in her head might actually be the key to understanding what’s happening to her, and worse, that if she doesn’t find out his identity before it’s too late, they both may not survive.

Well… those first few lines definitely got me hooked! Did they get you too?

I really loved Pen and Xander and enjoyed Laekan Zea Kemp’s gorgeous storytelling, so I wanted to read something else by her. The premise for this book sounds super intriguing and fascinating. I’ve don’t know much about KLS, but I’ve seen a short documentary about it a few months ago. I was surprised to find out that a disease like this exists — it’s both interesting and incredibly terrifying.

Anyway, if you’re interested in adding this book to your TBR, then head over to Bookbub right now because it’s FREE for download.

What do you think so far? Are you going to add this book to your TBR or pass? Let me know in the comments below. I’d love to hear from you!
