aboutthebook2

Her lips have the power to boost. Her love can grant power unparalleled. In an ongoing conflict against ravishingly beautiful beings from another dimension, Aurora Haddix’s abilities allow her to turn the tide of the battle.
Born a Natch, one of the population naturally endowed with superhuman powers at birth, Aurora tries to make the right choice. Her handsome, overprotective best friend and her tortured, grizzled mentor want her to use her powers for good. Kiss a Natch and they become more powerful for a few minutes. Allow one inside her and their powers are intensified for a full day. She wants to help, but she can’t get their roguish, virile former comrade out of her mind—and he wants her to join his underground band of Renegades. Then there’s the dark elf king, the leader of the otherworldly Nelians determined to infiltrate Earth—Aurora’s number one target and the most devastatingly gorgeous man she’s ever seen.
Aurora’s body makes her the most sought-after Natch in a war that might end on her say-so. Only with the way her inner passion ignites at each touch, she’s not so sure of her true reasons for pursuing the four alluring men who seek to possess her.

“And how do you boost Natch powers?”

“Roulette?” I asked.

She flung a hand up in the hair, her attention still riveted on the screen. “You’re on your own with this one.”

I met Nash’s eyes. He just nodded at me, as if to convey he wasn’t dropping this until we finished our charade.

“I kiss them,” I admitted, my voice growing quiet.

Nash tsked. “That’s good for a few minutes, Succubus Lips.” That was my “official” code name in our files, though I would clobber anyone who dared call me that in person. I didn’t have a cute code name like Roulette, birth name Sasha. I side-eyed Nash, and he gently threw both hands up in surrender. “My bad. Miss Haddix. Please continue. How does a Natch boost their power via your Natch ability for one full day?”

“They have…” I didn’t know why this was embarrassing me so much. Everyone in Veras knew it. Everyone in Renegade knew it for that matter.

Oh, fuck, don’t think about Zander.

Huh. Quiet for once on the other end of the bond.

I exhaled deeply. “They have to have sex with me. Penetrate me.”

Roulette whistled and started fanning herself. “Okay, I think I might visit the little girls’ room.” She pushed back from the console and mouthed a silent “sorry” my way. I shook my head and waved her away. Once she turned the corner, I said, “Which would be kind of hard for Roulette and Chastity, okay? Don’t tease her.”

“I wasn’t teasing.” Nash pivoted his chair toward me, his knee bouncing. “I’m serious. Wade thinks maybe the women could stick their hands—”

I cradled my face in my hand, shielding my eyes from the inanity of my supposed best friend. My temptingly gorgeous best friend. Who was it who had decided we should stay friends-with-benefits again? Right. Me. Foolish me. “Can we not do this?”

“We tested that theory,” he said quietly. “You and me.”

“And?” I said, my own knee now bouncing.

“It might not have worked that well,” he admitted. “Probably boosted a few hours. But that’s better than nothing, Aurora. The women could get a boost for a few hours and maybe boost again when it wears off and then the men can boost once a day—”

“Nash, are you hearing yourself?”

synopsis2

On the remnants of oil platforms in the Gulf of Mexico and Dauphin Island, Joe is a typical Nob Platform teenager, except that her Mom left a year ago for a more social Platform, and her Dad sometimes forgets she exists. But she knows she wants a career in Communications, so her high school senior project “See-Saw” focuses on long-distance underwater connections. Drayton, Joe’s best friend, discovers lights moving on Land at the same time Joe picks up SOS signals with her See-Saw.

Though Land has been silent since technology was destroyed during the Moralist Revolution, Joe and Drayton discover that the Platform Planning Commission (PPC) seems to be ultimately responsible for the Bone Virus that precipitated the Revolution. They enlist the help of Flox, a debunked scientist, to take them to Land to investigate the remnants of human Land society—before the PPC can stop them. What they find on Land will forever change the course of their lives and the lives of all Platform Dwellers.

excerpt2

“Stop. No, really. What has salvaging come to? We’re eating on Yield signs.”

“Well, how many real plates do you have left?”

My great-grandmother hadn’t thought to bring plates, just scientific equipment. So my father had grown up eating out of whatever his mother could find that was serviceable—shells, Styrofoam cones, or with his hands from the cooking vessel. But my mother had brought almost twenty plates to their marriage. She didn’t take any of them with her, so there are eighteen left. Most of them are patched, but two are in pristine condition.

Lisette nudges my arm, and I jerk in my seat. Duritz scoops an interesting seaweed salad onto my plate. The seaweed has been sun baked in a light yellow sauce. I don’t even look at Lisette’s plate. I’m not fond of eels.

“Bon appetite,” Duritz says happily and backs away from the table.

I don’t mind the taste of seaweed, so I take a big bite. The yellow sauce is tangy, but I can’t place the flavor. Whatever it is, it’s much better than the plain sea grass that I had for dinner last night.

“Not bad,” I say between mouthfuls. “Yours?”

Lisette makes a face. “Should have gone with the farmed sponge. Going to have to force this down.”

We don’t waste any resources on the platform, including food. We save bones, recycle waste water, and use every scrap of material that we have until it goes in the permanent scrap pile. Even then we keep it to stuff beds.

Lisette gags and gulps down her water.

I push my glass toward her. “Have some of mine. At least it isn’t octopus. That would be a real mess before our last classes. Indigestion on a plate.”
