Delightfully weird and entertaining sci-fi romcom adventure

So… this didn’t turn out to be what I was expecting and took a while to live up to the amazing introduction that had me completely intrigued, BUT… I thought Lexi by Heidi Hewett was a weirdly fascinating and fun sci-fi story.

The first chapter of this book was really GOOD. There was a sense of danger and excitement and I can’t tell you what happened, but it was utterly thrilling and had me instanty hooked. So, of course I was super intrigued and really excited for an action-filled plot with plenty of suspense, humor, romance, and unexpected twists and turns. The majority of the book was definitely not flat or lackluster, but it did take some time to get to the entertaining parts. The pacing was a bit slow at times and there were also some awkward dialogues that just didn’t flow well together. Having said that, there were some action, misunderstandings, complications, and fun drama that kept the story moving along. I also absolutely adored Lexi with all my heart and her quirks and humor and that really made this story so much more enjoyable to read. I also thought the world building was interestingly well done and I had a great time learning about robotics and AIs. The ending was really heartwarming, beautifully wrapped up the story and left a silly smile on my face.

I loved Lexi from the start and thought she was a fascinating and wonderful character. I loved her personality, her curiosity, her honesty, her bravery, and her caring attitude. I loved all her adorably weird responses and just the way she saw life even though she’s a bot programmed to react in certain ways. It was truly fun watching her explore the outside world and make sense of everything she was feeling.

John Michael charmed me in the beginning, but I kind of lost interest in him for a while. He went along with what others wanted for him and never really stood his ground. He followed and listened to what his father wanted him to do with his life. He let Celine, his annoyingly persistent fiancée, decide for him and their future together. He just didn’t seem to have a backbone… at least not right away. I’m glad he eventually changed and by the end…he finally chose to do things for himself and what made him happy.

Romance wise.. I wished there were more swoons. I enjoyed the relationship between Lexi and John Michael, but I was kind of hoping the chemistry would be more intense. It was still really fun and interesting to see them both work out their feelings and they had some humorous and sweet moments.

Overall, this was a delightfully weird and entertaining sci-fi romcom. Aside from a few hiccups I’ve mentioned, I had a wonderful time going on this adventure with Lexi and John Michael and I enjoyed exploring this unique dystopian world the Hewett created. This story was fun, imaginative and thought-provoking and I think sci-fi fans would really enjoy it.
